Festive Greetings
My wish for 2012 is that all teams play their home matches at their home ground rather than at that of their opponents :-)
To all at the Forth, let's make 2012 a year to remember !

Forth v Newmains - Game Off
Newmains United on Saturday
Royal Albert 0 Forth Wanderers 1
Kris Jarvie is under there somewhere ... |
Kenny Wright had a couple of early chances for the Wanderers but slipped the ball past the post on both occasions, the second after a perfect pass from Gordon Murphy. Royal Albert then created several chances as the half wore on but a combination of poor finishing and stout defending kept the scoreline blank. The Albert also had a squeak for a penalty but the player went down in instalments and was booked for his efforts. As half time approached, Kris Jarvie just failed to connect with a Kenny Wright cross and then the same player flashed a header over from a pinpoint Barry Canning cross.

Leamahagow at home next Saturday ?
However, the 'Gow have an outstanding Cup match against Whitehills to play tomorrow and a further postponement, a draw or a 'Gow victory will result in the cancellation of the 'Gow v Forth game.
As the 'Gow are 2/7 to win, I'm thinking it's unlikely we'll have a league match next weekend.
Royal Albert Preview
games at Kingshill Park cancelled due to failed pitch inspections.
Last season, there wasn't much to separate the teams, a 1-1 draw at Kingshill being followed with a 1-0 victory at Gasworks Park courtesy of a Gordon Murphy strike in one of Wanderers better performances of the season.
The Albert have recovered after a disappointing start, registering a goalless draw with Johnstone Burgh and a one goal victory away to Blantyre Vics in their last two matches. They currently sit eighth in the division with 2 wins, a draw and 6 defeats having scored 14 and conceded 22.
Forth manager Jamie McKenzie has injury doubts over goalkeeper Chic Clark and striker Kenny Wright while Bryan Felvus will be sidelined for at least three weeks with medial ligament damage. Here's to a speedy recovery Felvy !
Think this will be a tough one, but with some enforced changes necessitating a personnel reshuffle, I'm sure those who've been waiting patiently on the sidelines will take their chance to come in and get the job done.

Carluke Rovers 0 Forth Wanderers 1
Forth manager Jamie McKenzie named an unchanged side for this vital derby match knowing three points were vital to peg back Carluke and keep the Wanderers title aspirations on track. A decent crowd had gathered in the winter sun to witness proceedings, including a healthy contingent from Forth.
Bryan Felvus's deflected shot finds the net |
Forth then their first penalty shout when a Gordon Murphy cross was met by the head of Barry Canning and his header seemed to strike a Carluke hand but the referee waved away the appeals. Bryan Felvus then had an excellent opportunity to double the lead but he flashed his header narrowly wide. Carluke pressed when they could without creating any clear cut chances although Chic Clark had to be alert to thwart an excellent run from their number 11.
Chris McGroarty flights in a free kick. |
McGroarty then had a shot saved before Carluke had an effort deflected narrowly wide with keeper Clark wrong-footed. Kenny Wright then hit the side netting before Bryan Felvus was substituted on the cusp of half-time after failing to shake off an earlier knock, Kris Jarvie replacing him.
Paul Gemmell tussles in midfield. |
Alan Stevenson had a shot deflected over and Kris Jarvie had a close range effort turned away by the Rovers keeper while at the other end Clark was saving whatever Carluke could throw at him.
Gordon Murphy shot narrowly over before a cross cum shot from him was misjudged by the keeper and hit the top of the bar. Kenny Wright then shot tamely at the keeper after failing to spot a lung bursting run from Chris McGroarty.
Alan Stevenson picked up a second yellow card on 75 minutes leading to a nervy finish for all those of a Forth persuasion. Carluke hit the top of the bar with a lob and despite some late pressure the Forth defence was resolute, a Chris Newall block was particularly timely, and held out for a deserved victory.

Carluke Rovers Preview
This will be the fourth time the teams have met this season although the first at Carluke's new stadium. Pre-season the sides fought out a draw in the Clydesdale Cup with the Wanderers winning on penalties while Forth also won the Sectional League Cup tie by three goals to two, after coming back from two down. The latest game at Kingshill in September was the proverbial game of two halves with Forth dominating the first half and scoring twice, while Carluke came roaring back to score four without reply.
The teams pay their respects to Clara Kay earlier in the season. |
The Rovers have won 10 games on the bounce including 8 of their 9 league games to date, which is a fantastic achievement and will certainly present a stern test for the Wanderers. They've recently added three players to their squad, strengthening it further and will no doubt feel confident on their home patch.
However, Forth have been playing well of late, discounting the Camelon Cup match, and put in a tremendous team effort at Blantyre last week. Although we have a small squad, the starting 11 last week didn't include the likes of Craig Crawford, Martin Harty, Tony Traynor, Chris Newall or Kris Jarvie so we've certainly quality within it. I also think we'll enjoy the Carluke pitch, which should allow us to play a more expansive passing game. Manager Jamie McKenzie has a full squad to choose from for our biggest match of the season to date.
Finally, to my mind, we're the best team in this league, certainly of the ones we've played, and this is an opportunity for us to finally get the credit we deserve. A chance to silence the naysayers, the begrudgers, the "it's all down to their pitch brigade" and the condescending "only little Forth" know it alls, once and for all.
I believe we can win. The money is down to back it up.
McBookie Odds :
Carluke : 10/11
Draw :7/2
Forth : 13/8

A goal in each half from Kenny Wright ensured the points went back to Kingshill and despite the Vics pulling a goal back, Forth were under more threat from the fog causing an abandonment.
Kenny Wright breaks for goal. |
Gordon Murphy attempts to block. |
By this point the fog was beginning to engulf parts of the ground, raising unfounded fears of an abandonment and during this time the Vics pulled a goal back although how and by whom I've no idea as it was lost in the fog. Forth had further chances notably from Craig Crawford who had an excellent free kick well saved by the home keeper. The same player had earlier had three attempts to beat the Vics keeper who did well to block the first two but his third effort appeared to be heading in before Kenny Wright took a touch in an offside position. Mr Wright was insistent it was going wide but I'm not so sure.

Blantyre Vics Preview
The Vics have amassed 11 points so far in the league, starting strongly by inflicting Carluke's only defeat on the opening game of the season by 6 goals to 4. In their 8 games they have scored 19 goals and conceded 20 including 4 to Maryhill in their last league match. However, they had an excellent result in the Junior Cup last week knocking out Jeanfield Swifts by two goals to one and I believe there have been some changes to the squad which faced Forth back in September.
That match ended in a 4 nil victory to the Wanderers, with Kenny Wright and Bryan Felvus both notching doubles, and resulted in Vics manager Alan Shields describing his team as "hopeless" on the Pie and Bovril Junior Forum. He also commented that "the park is a shithole", referring to Kingshill, so I'm sure the Forth lads will be relishing the opportunity to play on, what one would assume to be, a bowling green like surface on Saturday ...
Forth manager Jamie McKenzie has injury doubts over Chris McGroarty and Martin Harty while Marc Napier may also be unavailable. Goalkeeper Glenn Weir returns to the squad.
McBookie Odds :
Blantyre 5/4
Draw 7/2
Forth 6/5
On a final note, I know the scheduling of Junior matches is no picnic, but after playing the Vics for the second time, we're due to face Carluke for the second time despite still having to play Lesmahagow, Wishaw, Royal Albert and Rossvale. Surely there must be a better way ?

Lesmahagow Match Postponed
Forth Wanderers 0 Camelon 2
Two second half goals separated the sides although things could've been different had Chris McGroarty converted a gilt-edged opportunity with the teams still level. Two harsh sendings off for the Forth compounded the misery and ended any realistic chance of an upset.
Forth began the second half on the front foot and should've taken the lead when a pinpoint cross from Bryan Felvus was met by the head of Chris McGroarty six yards out but the header sailed agonisingly over. This was to prove costly as Camelon opened the scoring through their number 10, who looked suspiciously offside,
despite the best efforts of Lewis McKinlay on the line. Camelon were now in the ascendancy and it was no surprise when they doubled their advantage through their number 7.
The referee then took centre stage sending off Barry Canning for what appeared no more than a strong 50/50 tackle and then awarding Camelon a penalty when Lewis McKinlay accidentally handled on the line. McKinlay was also sent packing but Camelon hit the post with the penalty and the 9 men of Forth still had a glimmer of hope. Chances were at a premium however and were mainly restricted to long-range free kicks. Unsurprisingly, Camelon created several further chances with their numerical superiority but a combination of good goalkeeping and poor finishing meant the game ended without any further scoring.
Overall, a disappointing result as Forth weren't at their best, but the Wanderers certainly weren't disgraced against their East Super League opponents.

Camelon Game Goes Ahead
Camelon Preview
The Mariners, who hail, unsurprisingly, from Camelon near Falkirk, are past winners of the trophy, having won it in 1994/95 and losing in the final the following season.
Currently in the East Region Super League, Camelon have played seven league matches this season, winning two, drawing two and losing three. They currently sit fifth in the division having scored ten and conceded fourteen.
Forth manager Jamie McKenzie has a full squad to choose from for what will undoubtedly be a stern test for the Wanderers.
Kick-off is at 2:30 pm and at the moment everyone is hopeful the match will go ahead, depending of course on the weather between now and kick off. Should things change, details will be blogged/tweeted as soon as I get them.

Royal Albert Game Called Off Again
Forth Wanderers 2 Lesmahagow 1
Chris McGroarty Goes Close |
The Wanderers were without three regulars today with David Grant, Alan Stevenson and Kenny Wright all missing but began the game brightly and opened the scoring in 6 minutes when a 20 yard shot from Bryan Felvus was badly misjudged by the 'Gow keeper and ended up in the onion bag. Chris McGroarty then flashed a header narrowly over on 11 minutes before Lesmahagow broke up the park and the striker found himself one on one with the Forth keeper but shot meekly past. Ten minutes later the 'Gow number 10 found himself through on the keeper but once again the ball was fired wide and on 28 minutes the 'Gow number 8 burst through, rounded Forth keeper Chic Clark but shot wide. Clark then tipped over a netbound header as Lesmahagow began to dominate proceedings and the number 10 again shot past when it seemed easier to score, much to the consternation of the 'Gow faithful.
Chris McGroarty then just failed to cleanly connect with an excellent Felvus cross on 35, but undettered he doubled the Forth advantage a minute later after the ball was well won in midfield by Kris Jarvie who laid it off to McGroarty allowing him to smash the ball past the helpless keeper. Lesmahagow had an opportunity on 41 to pull one back after Gordon Murphy committed a foul on the edge of his own box but the resultant free kick sailed high over the bar and then Chic Clark made another good save just on half time.
Bryan Felvus prepares to get a shot away |
With manager Jamie McKenzie's half time words ringing in their ears, Forth began the second half purposefully and appeared to have stemmed the Lesmahagow tide although as the half wore on the 'Gow once again began to dominate. Chic Clark had another important save in the 56th minute before Bryan Felvus could have settled the tie when he broke through and rounded the keeper but the angle was against him and he couldn't get his shot away. Barry Canning then appeared to be pushed in the box but the referee waved away the Forth penalty appeals. Lesmahagow then got the goal their play deserved when their number 10 smashed the ball past Clark on 67 minutes, setting up a nervous finale for all in the Forth camp. The same 'Gow player had a chance a minute later but shot over. As the game reached it's conclusion Forth were defending deeper and deeper as Lesmahagow pushed for an equaliser but despite several close calls some resolute defending saw the Wanderers hold out and progress to the second round.
Overall, Lesmahagow will probably feel they should have won the match due to the number of chances they created but Forth can be proud of a great team effort with everyone digging in as Lesmahagow pushed for an equaliser. We've played far better and lost this season that's for sure, but in Cup matches all that matters is that your name is in the hat come the next round draw. Objective attained !

Lesmahagow Preview
Last season, honours were shared in the league, with the 'Gow winning 2-0 at Craighead Park and the Wanderers triumphing 2-1 in the return fixture.
The teams have already met in the Clydesdale Cup Final this season with the Forth coming out on top by three goals to one, and if that game is anything to go by it should be another close, entertaining match. Lesmahagow won their first five league matches on the bounce before losing to leaders Carluke last week, although a missed penalty and a sending off possibly contributed to their downfall.
Forth have a full squad to choose from, other than David Grant who is on best man duties, and the pitch is currently wet but playable. However, bearing in mind last week, it's the referee who will make the ultimate decision.

Royal Albert Game Called Off
Personally, I've seen games take place at Kingshill in worse conditions, but there we have it.
Royal Albert Preview
Last season, there wasn't much to separate the teams, a 1-1 draw at Kingshill being followed with a 1-0 victory at Gasworks Park courtesy of a Gordon Murphy strike in one of Wanderers better performances last season.
The Albert haven't started the season as they would have hoped, registering a single victory away to Stonehouse amongst six defeats although they also recorded a great away victory at Lesmahagow in the sectional league cup.
Forth manager Jamie McKenzie welcomes back David Grant, and other than Marc Napier, who is unavailable, has a full squad at his disposal.
The pitch is currently very wet although secretary Jim Kelly believes he will have it playable for 2pm tomorrow. Obviously, this is dependent on the weather today and on Saturday morning but it's to be hoped the game will go ahead, giving Forth the opportunity to continue their winning run.
Newmains United 1 Forth Wanderers 7
Kenny Wright tucks away a Tony Traynor cut-back for the fourth |
The Wanderers started the game brightly and Kenny Wright forced the Newmains keeper into a smart save within 5 minutes at the expense of a corner. The same player couldn't quite connect properly with a Gordon Murphy cross two minutes later. Chris McGroarty was next to have a pop, shooting wide on 13 minutes. It was no surprise when Forth took the lead a minute later when Kenny Wright latched on to a great through ball from Chris McGroarty and smartly despatched a shot past the keeper. A minute or so later that man Wright made it 2-0 with another clinical finish and at this stage the Newmains defence had no answer to his pace and movement.
On 20 minutes Kenny Wright was almost through for his hat-trick but the ball just evaded him. Newmains hadn't shown a great deal up to this point, with the odd sporadic counter but pulled a goal back when Michael Duddy took advantage of a rare defensive lapse to score. Undettered by this setback Forth continued to press and Kenny Wright notched his hat-trick on 25 with another trademark clinical finish. Bryan Felvus set this one up, winning the ball tenaciously in midfield and setting up Wright with a perfect through ball. Felvus then narrowly failed to connect with a McGroarty cross as Forth threatened to run riot.
Kenny Wright bags his hat-trick |
Newmains weren't completely out of the game though and only a tremendous block from Gemmell and a superb save from Clark kept them at bay on 35. From the resulting corner Clark was forced into another fine save. At the other end the Newmains keeper, who played well despite losing seven, made two excellent blocks from Bryan Felvus. On 39 minutes the Newmains number 4 was shown a second yellow for scything down Wright on the edge of the box. Forth made it 4-1 five minutes from the interval when Tony Traynor hit the bye-line and delivered a perfect cut-back for Wright who lost his marker and slotted home.

FT 1-7
Overall, another professional performance from the Wanderers and the goals keep coming although, perhaps understandably, it became rather flat for a time in the second half with the game already won. Still, it's a pleasure to watch the Forth these days and long may that continue.
Finally, a special request for a Mrs Smith of Forth, your very own pin-up !

Newmains United Preview
Newmains hold a bit of an indian sign over the Forth at the moment, having triumphed in the last three encounters. Last season they won both matches 4-1 and in the league cup this season a late late penalty secured a 2-1 victory. The 4-1 defeat at Victoria Park was a particularly sore one, especially for Forth winger Gordon Murphy who recieved an additional 3 red cards after 'questioning' his initial sending off, which to be fair seemed harsh.
Newmains have only played three league matches this season, with the other three being postponed, and have so far registered a victory over Royal Albert and two defeats.
Since the league cup game, Forth have been in high scoring form and hopefully this will continue tomorrow with Kenny Wright, Bryan Felvus and Tony Traynor looking to add to their recent strikes.
David Grant is missing due to work commitments, but other than that manager Jamie McKenzie has a full squad to choose from.

Royal Albert Game Confirmed for 8th October
Good Luck Mr President !
On behalf of everyone at Forth Wanderers, I'd like to express sincere thanks and wish all the best to our President Jim Boyd and his wife May who are retiring to Spain on September 30th.
Jim saw his first Wanderers game over 50 years ago (I know, he doesn't look old enough...) and has been a Committee man for the past 30 years, becoming Vice-President and then President over time. He has carried out many functions at the club, painting the pavilion, cutting the grass, taking down the nets and latterly running the pie-hut serving supporters and the players after the match.
Jim with his long service diploma from the SJFA |
From a personal perspective, in my more 'sporadic' appearances at Wanderers matches over the years, he was always there with a smile, a handshake and a blether. It's fair to say without the friendliness of Jim all those years ago, along with a couple of others, I probably wouldn't be writing this blog today.
Without a doubt, he'll be a huge loss to the club he's served so well over the decades but perhaps he can put this new chapter of his life to good use and detail some of his memories of the Wanderers for me ! Regardless, I'm sure he'll keep in touch from sunnier climes.
Mr President, we salute you !
Johnstone Burgh Preview
Forth entertain Johnstone Burgh on Saturday in what promises to be a another tough encounter.
The Burgh have started the season well, registering two wins, a draw and one defeat so far. They've scored 13 goals, including four away to Stonehouse and six away to Rossvale last weekend. Their one reverse came against Carluke by the odd goal in five. Having been relegated from the Central 1st last season, they'll undoubtedly be focused on a quick return.
Forth are missing Martin Harty, Marc Napier and Chris Newall but have signed trialist Bryan Felvus from Fauldhouse in what I see as a great piece of business.

Rovers however, have started the season superbly. An opening 6-4 defeat to Blantyre Vics was followed by three straight wins, scoring 18 goals in the process.

Forth entertain Blantyre Victoria on Saturday in what promises to be a stern test. The Vics have started the season well, taking 7 points in their Surridge League Cup group and then getting their league campaign off to a flyer with a 6-4 victory at Carluke. They followed this up with a 1-1 draw at Johnstone Burgh and a 3-0 home victory over Rossvale, leaving them undefeated after three games. They are currently the bookies favourites to win the league having been relegated from the Central First last season.

Carluke Game Moved to Kingshill
Stonehouse Violet 0 Forth Wanderers 9
Despite missing three first team regulars the Wanderers went for the jugular from the off and were rewarded within 5 minutes when Kenny Wright cooly despatched a through ball past the keeper. Stonehouse fought their way back into the game and it took a couple of fine saves from Forth keeper Chic Clark to maintain the advantage. Gordon Murphy looked to have made it two on the half hour with a spectacular 25 yard shot but it was inexplicably ruled out by the referee. Forth were not to be denied however and a Felvus chance was turned into his own net by a Violet defender whilst trying to clear. Just before the interval, Kenny Wright burst through on goal, slid the ball past the keeper and was brought down. Red card and penalty to the Forth. Wright made no mistake from the spot. Tony Traynor sealed an excellent first half performance from Forth with a goal just prior to the break. HT 4-0.
The talk at half time was whether Forth would take their foot off the gas in the second half but those thoughts were dispelled early on when a neat move left Tony Traynor with a tap in for the fifth. Kenny Wright then secured his hat trick with a sixth before a shot cannoned off the post and back off the keepers head and into the net for the seventh on 65. There was no let up from the Wanderers as they attacked relentlessly and it was no surprise when substitute Kris Jarvie notched the eighth on 70 minutes. The scoring was completed on 75 minutes when Bryan Felvus got his name on the scoresheet to cap a promising debut. Despite numerous other chances double figures were to elude the Wanderers but at the end no-one was complaining.
Fair play to a well beaten Violet side who never resorted to rough house tactics as the score mounted. Overall a cracking display which gives us the best goal difference in the league and augurs well for what should be a cracker against Blantyre Vics next week.

Stonehouse Violet Preview
The Violet had one win and a draw in their League Cup group, identical to the Wanderers, and are also pointless after their first two league games. After a 4-1 home defeat to Johnstone Burgh, they narrowly lost 4-3 away to league newcomers Rossvale last week.
The Wanderers have Paul Gemmell and David Grant missing due to work commitments while Craig Crawford and Martin Harty are suspended. Kenny Wright is expected to return and manager Jamie McKenzie reports that he may have a new striker in the squad.
'Mon the Forth
Forth Wanderers 0 Maryhill 1
The game was only 3 minutes old when Maryhill scored from the penalty spot through Russell. Forth were architects of their own downfall however as an attempted passback to the keeper went out for a corner and from the corner Craig Crawford was adjudged to have handled. Russell made no mistake from the spot.
The game became rather ragged and chances were at a premium for both sides, although Maryhill struck the outside of a post and Craig Crawford shot straight at the 'Hill keeper when through one on one. Forth also had a decent shout for a penalty for handball, but where it was given at the other end, this time the referee waved away the strong Forth appeals. On such decisions games are won and lost and so it was to prove.
Forth keeper Chic Clark made a couple of good saves early in the second half before Forth took control of the game and created several chances. Kris Jarvie had a shot well saved and then headed just over before Brian McGinlay connected with a Gemmell cross at the back post only for 'Hill keeper Cannon to make a fantastic block on the line with his foot. A McGroarty free kick was then misjudged by the keeper and rebounded from the post with no-one on hand to follow up and score. Gordon Murphy then went on one of his mazy runs but finished by shooting weakly at the keeper. Tempers were becoming frayed and a spate of bookings followed culminating in Craig Crawford and Maryhill's Temporal being sent off deep into injury time.
Maryhill should have tied up the match when one of their substitutes was clean through but inexplicably he chose to shoot from 30 yards or so rather than advance on the keeper. Despite all the Forth pressure Maryhill held on and were obviously delighted to hear the final whistle.
The referee never seemed totally in control of a feisty match and his performance was summed up by him refusing to allow Forth to bring on substitute Mark McKay as he wasn't apparently on the team sheet. He relented when shown said team sheet and apparently the error was of his own making.
Reflecting on our league performances to date, it's hard to believe we're sitting pointless after the two games but I'm confident better days are just around the corner.

Maryhill Preview
Last season the honours were even with Forth triumphing 1-0 at Kingshill thanks to a Gordon Murphy goal and Maryhill winning the return 3-1. Wanderers actually led 1-0 in that game through a Paul Gemmell goal but, despite a heroic performance from Forth keeper Jim Doherty, Maryhill scored three goals in the last 20 minutes to record a deserved victory.
Looking forward to this one as it has the potential to be a cracking game.
'Mon the Forth.
St Roch's 2 Forth Wanderers 1
Forth will be disappointed not to have taken something from a game they should really have won. However, a combination of poor finishing and defensive lapses meant the points stayed in Glasgow.
Chris Newall was drafted into the team in place of Craig Napier at right back, in order to combat the height of the Roch's lineup and Paul Gemmell returned at left back.
Forth started brightly and took the game to their hosts although the home keeper was rarely troubled. When he was beaten by a vicious strike from Chris McGroarty his right hand post came to his rescue. The 'Candy Rock' forced their way back into the game as the half progressed and their tall number 9 scored the opener in the 37th minute.
Forth continued to press in the second half and got their rewards when a shot come cross by Gordon Murphy was fumbled by the Roch's keeper and ended in the back of the net on 75 minutes. Rather than go on and win the game, the Wanderers lost the winner in the 83rd minute when a Roch's substitute scored. Despite pushing everyone forward the equaliser just wouldn't come.
A disappointment then although it was a good day out with Provanmill Park being a friendly sort of place.

Shotts Bon Accord 4 Forth Wanderers 1
Shotts, apparently without several first team regulars, were the better team throughout although the Wanderers had some decent periods of play especially in the first half.
From the start Shotts made good use of the expanse of Hannah Park and Forth had trouble throughout the game dealing with the pace down both wings. Although Forth had some decent possession they were unable to create any clear cut chances within the final third in the early part of the first half.
After some sustained pressure, including several corner kicks, Shotts finally made the breakthrough when their number 9, who was a threat throughout the match, stroked home from a cross 10 minutes from the interval. Two minutes later however, Forth were level after Kris Jarvie turned in an excellent left wing cross from Gordon Murphy. This goal was somewhat contrversial as the stand side linesman initially raised his flag for offside before putting it down and allowing the attack to continue.
Just as it looked as if the Wanderers would go in level at half time, Shotts were awarded a penalty when Lewis McKinlay handled after appearing to slip as a result of the wet underfoot conditions. The Shotts number 7 made no mistake from the spot.
Shotts continued to dominate in the second half and increased their lead after goalkeeper Clark blocked a free kick from the edge of the box only for the Shotts number 9 to follow up and score. The scoring was completed by Shotts substitute number 16.
On a sour note, one Shotts player was carried off on a stretcher after a seemingly innocuous foul and an ambulance was waiting at the end of the game. Here's hoping he makes a full recovery.

Next up the 'Candy Rock' away in the first match of the league campaign.
'Mon the Forth.
Forth Wanderers 3 Carluke Rovers 2 - The Wright Stuff !
Carluke had raced into a two goal lead in the first half but Forth didn't let the heads go down and kept at them. They were rewarded when Alan Cameron tapped in just prior to the interval. The introduction of Kenny Wright at half time seemed to rejuvenate Forth and they wasted no time in going for the jugular. It was mainly one way traffic toward the Carluke goal and Rovers seemed to have no answer to Wright's pace and movement. It therefore came as no surprise when Wright notched the equaliser and then hit what proved to be the winner with around 15 minutes remaining. Once fully fit, he should score goals for fun at this level and certainly gives a different option in attack. Both teams also hit the woodwork in the second half but overall Forth merited the victory.
Next match is away at Shotts on Wednesday and it'll be interesting to see how the Wanderers fare against a team two divisions above them.

Forth Wanderers 1 Newmains 2
More to follow once I've had a pint and cheered up. Possibly.
Two days later after some reflection, I'll add the following points :
- apart from the miss-kick which resulted in the first Newmains goal, keeper Clark had a decent game with one tremendous stop.
- the sending off of Mark McKay seemed harsh, as from my vantage point he tried unsuccessfully to hurdle the keeper and avoid contact.
- we need Kenny Wright fit sharpish to add some pace and goals to the attack.
- the Newmains Committee win the award for the grumpiest of the season so far. It's fair enough to laugh when the decisions go your way but not to then go crazy when they go against you. And no, I don't believe in a bionic eye which allows you to clearly see decisions from a vantage point 50 yards away. No wonder a few of the Forth players had a word at the end ...
I've added some other photos here. Just bear in mind I'm no photographer.
Forth Wanderers 0 Wishaw 0
Wishaw started by far the better and dominated the majority of the first half creating several half chances while Forth couldn't seem to get going, their best chance a free kick well saved by the Wishaw keeper just before the interval. Chris McGroarty was pushing forward at every opportunity but this left gaps at the back for Wishaw to exploit. The Forth management changed things on 40 minutes with McGroarty moving into midfield, Gemmill moving to left back and substitute Murray coming on at right back. HT 0-0.
Forth began the second half brightly with another substitute Craig Crawford being introduced on the left but despite some decent possession and a few scrambles within the Wishaw box they couldn't make the breakthrough. Wishaw though were still dangerous on the break and one such move resulted in a second yellow card for Forth centre half Lewis McKinlay who it's fair to say 'took one for the team'. The Wishaw bench were increasingly unhappy with some of the tackling and this resulted in one of them (the manager ?) being given his marching orders by the whistler. A late Forth free kick on the edge of the Wishaw box was blocked and the game finished goalless.
Another clean sheet for the Forth but disappointment that they couldn't make the breakthrough in the second half despite pushing men forward at every opportunity. Having said that, Wishaw had their chances in the first half and seemed a much better outfit than the one which visited Kingshill at the tail end of last season.

Wishaw Game Tomorrow Moved to Forth
Forth win the Clydesdale Cup !
The 'Gow started the game better and took the lead with an unfortunate own-goal by Wanderers number 4 Grant, who headed into his own net whilst trying to clear. Undaunted Forth got back on level terms when Mark McKay scored from close range and took the lead with an excellent free kick from Crawford which left the keeper rooted to the spot.
Again, the 'Gow started the second half on top and hit the bar with their players claiming the ball had crossed the line when it bounced down. Forth gradually came more into the game and were awarded a penalty when Craig Crawford was fouled. The same player struck his kick firmly only for the Lesmahagow keeper to make an excellent save. However, Forth sealed the win with 15 minutes to go when substitute Alan Cameron converted an excellent cross from Crawford.
All in all it was an entertaining game and the new Forth management team have a trophy in the cabinet early doors.
Next up an away trip to Wishaw on Wednesday night.
Forth Wanderers 4 Tynecastle FC 0
Again manager Jamie McKenzie gave the majority of his squad a run out.
The only worrying aspect being that Forth finished with 9 men again, although this time due to knocks sustained by two players after all the substitutes had been used. Hopefully, it was just precautionary and the players concerned will be fit for the upcoming matches.
In a game without a malicious tackle, the referee was perhaps over zealous in booking a couple of the Tynecastle lads for dissent.
Roll on Monday night !
Clydesdale Cup Final Now at Kingshill Park
Friendly v Tynecastle FC
Forth Wanderers 1 Vale of Clyde 0
The Tin Pail were not without their chances especially two first half headers and both teams took the opportunity to make several substitutions as the game wore on.
The midges (and the rain) were much in evidence and this resulted in both benches vacating the dugouts and setting up beside the pavillion in an attempt to avoid the worst of them !
It's Lesmahagow in the Clydesdale Cup Final
The final is on Monday night at Carluke I believe, although I'll need to confirm this.

Forth 1 Carluke 1 - Forth win 4-3 on Penalties
The decent weather, or perhaps the recent lack of football, brought out a fair-sized crowd who witnessed if not a “rip-roaring” cup-tie then certainly an incident packed one.
The Forth team bore little resemblance to that which finished last season although a handful of familiar faces were in evidence. New signings Wright and McGroarty were unavailable due to holiday commitments, as were another three of the Wanderers squad. This goes some way to explain my use of numbers rather than names below.
A minutes silence was observed prior to kick-off in memory of Carluke stalwart Clara Kay.
Forth began brightly and the number 11 rattled the Carluke crossbar twice with shots from distance although Carluke should have taken the lead when a defensive mix-up let in their striker whose shot was just the wrong side of the post. Forth created another couple of chances, one of which looked easier to score than miss, but half-time came around with the game still goalless.
The first half was also notable for a vociferous Carluke ‘worthy’ who was relentlessly berating the Forth centre-half, who had a solid game overall and went on to score the deciding penalty, until taken to task in no uncertain terms by said players father. Cue a rather sheepish and less vociferous Carluke ‘worthy’ for the rest of the half. On behalf of those within earshot of the worthy – thanks for that !
Half-time entertainment was provided by the Haddington Athletic match secretary, who, on attempting to retrieve a ball, ended up on his bahookie much to the amusement of the crowd and especially the Forth substitutes. Take a bow son, take a bow.
The tackling seemed to step up a notch in the second half with the referee taking a more active part in the game. Forth took the lead when a mazy run and shot from the number 10, which took him past several players, deflected back from the keeper leaving the Forth number 11 to stroke the ball into the net. Forth’s trialist keeper then made a tremendous save as Carluke tried to get back on level terms.
The referee then took centre stage with some baffling decisions and the first Forth player was dismissed for a petulant kick, after what seemed like a far meatier challenge went unpunished minutes before. Carluke were coming more into the game and equalised when a cross from the right setup an easy finish. Forth were then reduced to 9 men when a second yellow card was issued to the Forth number 10 after a late tackle. An increasingly frustrated Forth manager, Jamie McKenzie, was then also sent off after questioning several of the referee’s decisions in an honest and heartfelt manner.
The nine men of Forth comfortably held out during the remaining minutes and penalties it was. Before they could be taken, another animated discussion took place between the referee and the Forth gaffer as to whether he would be allowed to talk to his team on the pitch prior to the shootout - he wasn’t.
Carluke began the shootout and put away their first three penalties and gained the advantage when Forth scored the first two but put the third over the bar. Then the trialist keeper took centre stage saving the final two Carluke penalties and with Forth scoring their fourth (eh?!) it left the Forth number 5 to coolly slot away the deciding spot kick as you can see in the header picture above.
Overall, an entertaining game and a positive start from a Forth perspective. On this evidence we’ll certainly not lack for effort or commitment although I’ll reserve judgement on the discipline for now !
